How to Use Honey in Cooking & Recipes

How to Use Honey in Cooking & Recipes

The Kitchen's Most Underrated Ingredient

Most people keep honey on the shelf for sweetening tea or spreading on toast. But raw, local honey — the kind we harvest right here at The S&S Bee Company — is one of the most versatile and flavorful ingredients you can stock in your kitchen. Here's how to put it to work.

1. Glazes & Marinades

Honey's natural sugars caramelize beautifully under heat, making it perfect for glazing roasted meats and vegetables. Try whisking together honey, soy sauce, garlic, and a splash of apple cider vinegar for a quick glaze on roasted carrots, salmon, or chicken thighs. Our 1 LB Varietal Honey varieties — like wildflower or buckwheat — add incredible depth of flavor that plain white sugar simply can't match.

2. Salad Dressings

A touch of honey in a vinaigrette does two things: it balances the acidity of the vinegar and acts as an emulsifier to keep the dressing from separating. A classic honey-Dijon dressing comes together in minutes — just olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, a clove of garlic, and a generous spoonful of honey. Our Lavender Honey adds a floral note that's especially lovely over arugula or mixed greens.

3. Baking

Honey can substitute for sugar in most baked goods, and it brings extra moisture and a richer flavor profile. As a rule of thumb, use ¾ cup of honey for every 1 cup of sugar called for, and reduce the liquid in the recipe by about ¼ cup. Honey also browns faster than sugar, so lower your oven temperature by 25°F. Try it in banana bread, granola, or homemade energy bars.

4. Cheese Boards & Charcuterie

A drizzle of honey over aged cheddar, brie, or gorgonzola is one of the simplest and most impressive flavor pairings you can serve. The sweetness of honey cuts through the richness of the cheese beautifully. Our 1.5 OZ Honey Sampler is a perfect addition to any cheese board — and it makes a wonderful gift, too.

5. Beverages

Honey dissolves more smoothly in warm liquids, making it ideal for teas, lattes, and cocktails. Try a hot toddy with lemon, whiskey, and a big spoonful of our 1 LB Infused Honey for a warming winter drink, or stir honey into iced green tea for a naturally sweetened summer refresher.

Start Cooking with Real Honey

The difference between raw, local honey and the ultra-processed stuff on grocery store shelves is remarkable — in flavor, complexity, and nutritional value. When you cook with honey from The S&S Bee Company, you're using a product that's never been heated beyond what's necessary, retaining its natural enzymes, antioxidants, and rich varietal character.
